When you have extracted or missing teeth, it's important to have them replaced, not only for aesthetic reasons but to preserve the integrity of your oral health as well. When a tooth is missing, it can cause the bone surrounding the missing tooth root to deteriorate over time. To prevent this, it's important to receive a tooth restoration, such as a dental implant, as soon as possible. Providing long-term results that last for many years, dental implants are an immensely sought-after option for tooth replacement. Dental implants look and function similarly to your real teeth, which makes them incredibly popular among our Colorado patients. To perform your implant procedure, a titanium post (or another biocompatible material) is placed into your jawbone to replicate the function of a tooth root. Over time, this implant will fuse to the bone and a cosmetic restoration (such as a crown) will be placed atop. Our skilled team of oral and maxillofacial surgeons will work closely with your restorative dentist to ensure that you receive your best results.

"I am an orthodontist and I couldn't recommend anyone higher for implants or wisdom teeth removal. Dr. Nelson is professional, funny, and extremely detail-oriented to make sure he does the job right. He and his staff will make sure that you enjoy your visit (as much as you can enjoy getting teeth pulled!) and that you're doing well after your visit also. Highly recommend!"- Z.N. / Google / Sep 28, 2014
"I had my wisdom teeth out yesterday morning by Dr. Steuer and wanted to share my experience. I am a dental assistant myself and I always refer my patients who need oral surgery, implants, etc to CS Oral Surgery due to the great feedback I have received time and time again. I have been putting off my own treatment for years due to severe anxiety. I have only had braces and a few fillings so the thought of an extraction was very scary to me, especially after hearing so many horror stories. Even me, a dental assistant who knows the procedure, was terrified. When I went for my consult the staff was very kind. Dr. Steuer gave it to me straight but also was reassuring. When I went in for the procedure I signed my consent forms, treatment plan, and waited maybe 5 minutes. I was taken back by a nice girl with black hair and glasses. She sat me down, took some vitals, and the blonde with glasses inserted my IV on the first try despite my notorious tiny veins. And, it didn't hurt! I felt very warm inside before the anesthesia and started to pass out. Dr. Steuer immediately laid me back to get the blood to my head and started the IV drip. Then it was lights out. I don't remember waking up or leaving. The next thing I knew I was in the car yelling at the other drivers from the backseat. (Silliness from the anesthesia). I was numb for about 4 or 5 hours post op. No pain! Dr. Steuer called to check on me and was very patient with my questions and reassuring me I was doing well. Today I am 27 hours post op and wish I hadnt been so terrified. I have a little soreness when I change gauze, but other than that it has been very manageable. If it stays this way I know without a doubt it is because of Dr. Steuer and his team's excellent patient care and skill that I have minimal post op discomfort. I will be even more enthusiastic when referring my patients to their office in the future due to my own experience. Thank you Dr. Steuer and your angelic staff. It takes special people to be so kind and patient during times of high anxiety!"- K.P. / Google / Sep 28, 2017
"This past Wedn was my 2nd treatment with Dr. Nelson. Again, he did a tremendous job for me. I had a sinus lift under sedation and added 2 implants into my upper right jaw. He listened to my concerns and I had no problems with the sedation as well as the healing. Today is my 2nd day after this operation and I am healing well. Thank you, Dr. Nelson. I will be your patient for as long as I have teeth!"- P.H. / Google / Aug 28, 2019
In order to be a suitable candidate for dental implants, you must have healthy gum tissue and enough jawbone strength to support an implant long-term. For some patients, they must undergo certain bone and gum grafting procedures before they are considered candidates for dental implants. To improve your chances of being approved for this incredibly popular treatment, we encourage you to schedule an appointment at one of our Colorado offices. Our skilled specialists can evaluate the condition of your jawbone and recommend the treatments necessary to prepare your arches for dental implants.
What To Expect
To assess your candidacy for dental implants and the condition of your jawbone, our team will run scans of your internal oral and facial structures using our state-of-the-art cone beam 3D imaging technology. This equipment will provide our surgeons with a comprehensive view of your bone, nerves, and teeth in incredible detail, which will then allow them to assess your situation and formulate a treatment plan that will restore your oral health. Some patients may require certain bone or gum grafting procedures before they are approved for dental implants. These will need to be done first, and once you are healed, it will be time to move on to the next steps of your care.
Your dental implant procedure will begin with a member of our team numbing the treatment areas with a local anesthetic and administering any additional sedation. Once you are comfortable and fully numb, one of our surgeons will make an incision in your gums so the titanium post can be placed into the jawbone. Once the post is in its ideal position, the gums will be stitched closed. Depending on the type of implant you are receiving, some of the post may be visible beyond the gums or it may be fully concealed underneath. It will take several months for the implant to fully integrate with the surrounding jawbone tissue. When this is done, you will return to our office so your customized dental restoration can be placed.
Following your dental implant procedure, it's normal to notice some minor discomfort, bleeding, bruising, and inflammation at and around the treatment sites. Before we release you to be sent home, a member of our team will talk with you and let you know what you can expect in the following weeks. We will also provide you with detailed instructions so you can properly care for your post-op incisions. Once your final restoration is placed, your dental implants can be cared for just like your natural teeth with daily flossing and brushing. You will be expected to return to our office for any scheduled follow-up appointments, as well as continue to see your general dentist so we all can monitor your progress.
At our Colorado oral surgery offices, we do what we can to make sure your care is accessible and as affordable as possible. Some of the costs of your dental implants may be covered by your insurance, depending on your specific plan. A member of our team will get in touch with your carrier to learn about your benefits and calculate your out-of-pocket costs. If you are planning on using medical financing to cover some of the costs of your dental implant, our office can provide you with any necessary information. Our Colorado Springs and Pueblo, CO offices are proud to partner with CareCredit®.
